In plain language
A short report from Stanford, with a Qvin co-author, comparing menstrual blood cytokines in 7 women with uterine fibroids and 4 controls. Samples were collected on the first heavy day with a modified menstrual pad carrying a dried blood strip; four immune markers (G-CSF, IL-1α, IL-6 and VEGF-A) trended higher on average in the fibroid group, and IL-1β trended lower.
Key numbers
- 7 vs 4
- Women with fibroids versus controls
- 4 up, 1 down
- G-CSF, IL-1α, IL-6 and VEGF-A higher; IL-1β lower
- Day 1
- Collected on the first heavy day, on a dried strip
What it means
Menstrual blood may be a practical way to study the biology behind fibroid symptoms, which had not been looked at this way before. It is early research, not a test.
What it does not show
A pilot with 11 women in total that reports trends, not statistically tested differences. Much larger studies are needed before any of these markers could be relied on.
