Concordance of hemoglobin A1c and reproductive hormone levels in menstrual and venous blood

Naseri S, Avrutsky MI, Capati C, et al.F&S Reports · 2024DOI 10.1016/j.xfre.2023.11.009

In plain language

In 152 women aged 19 to 50 with regular periods, HbA1c and the hormones TSH, AMH, FSH and LH measured on Q-Pad dried menstrual samples were compared with venous blood drawn within 60 hours. Correlations were r = 0.96 for HbA1c and 0.91 to 0.94 for the hormones, and interassay variability was below 6%. In stability tests on samples from three participants, results held for 53 days (HbA1c) and 15 days (hormones) at room temperature.

Key numbers

r = 0.96
HbA1c, Q-Pad versus venous blood
r = 0.91–0.94
TSH, AMH, FSH and LH
53 / 15 days
HbA1c / hormones stable on the dried strip at room temperature, tested in 3 participants

What it means

One passive sample on the Q-Pad gave HbA1c and four hormone results that tracked a venous blood draw closely in women with regular periods, mostly within normal ranges. Each hormone still needs its own clinical and regulatory validation; only HbA1c monitoring in women with diabetes is FDA cleared today.

What it does not show

Women with regular periods, mostly normal-range values, one sponsor lab, venous draw up to 60 hours apart; not tested in diabetes, PCOS/PMOS, perimenopause or other disease groups, and the hormone results are not a cleared test.
